Chaos Orbs
Chaos Orbs are the backbone of
Path of Exile 2’s trading economy. Their most effective use is rerolling the modifiers of rare items, giving them new stats entirely. This is particularly valuable during the early to mid-game when players are trying to optimize gear quickly without crafting expensive items. Additionally, Chaos Orbs are the de facto standard for trade, making them the most liquid currency type. Holding onto a healthy stockpile of Chaos Orbs allows you to make opportunistic purchases on the market or flip valuable items.
Exalted Orbs
Exalted Orbs are used to add new modifiers to rare items and are best reserved for high-end crafting. When working on mirror-tier gear, players often use Exalted Orbs after establishing a solid base through other methods such as Fossils, Essences, or bench crafting. Because of their rarity and value, Exalted Orbs are rarely used casually. Instead, many players sell them or use them as high-end trade currency to acquire premium items.
Divine Orbs
Divine Orbs are extremely powerful in POE 2 due to their ability to reroll the numeric values of mods on gear. These are best used when you already have a perfect combination of affixes and simply need to fine-tune the values for maximum efficiency. For example, increasing the roll of a critical strike chance or resistance to near-perfect levels can significantly boost performance. Divine Orbs are also used to upgrade some Uniques and are becoming increasingly important in the high-end meta.
Orb of Alchemy
Orbs of Alchemy are most commonly used to upgrade normal (white) items into rare items. They are perfect for turning strong base items such as maps or jewelry into usable rare items early on. In the endgame, Alchemy Orbs are frequently applied to maps to make them rare, ensuring more loot and modifiers for farming. Efficient players often keep a large supply for mapping and crafting purposes.
Orb of Fusing
This currency is essential for linking sockets on gear. The best use of Orbs of Fusing is attempting to six-link body armor or weapons, which unlocks the full potential of gem support combinations. Because six-linking can take hundreds of tries, many players prefer to trade for already linked gear. However, saving a stash of Orbs of Fusing allows players to self-link high-value bases or Uniques when necessary.
Orb of Regret
Orbs of Regret grant passive skill refund points. These are most useful when tweaking your build mid-league, experimenting with new skill setups, or correcting pathing errors. Veteran players also use them when transitioning from a leveling build to a final endgame version. While not used in crafting directly, their strategic value in character optimization is significant.
Essences
Essences provide a deterministic crafting method and are ideal for early-game crafting. They guarantee a specific mod while converting an item to rare status, making them far more reliable than Chaos Orbs for certain stats. For example, Essence of Greed guarantees life, while Essence of Wrath provides lightning damage. They’re best used on good item bases with decent potential to become upgrades or sellable items.
Fossils and Resonators
Fossils are primarily used for more advanced crafting methods. They allow selective blocking and enhancement of mod pools and work especially well with Resonators. Their best use is crafting high-end gear where Chaos spam or Exalted Orbs would be too unpredictable. With the right fossil combinations, players can force specific mod types, such as physical damage or elemental resistance, making them indispensable in crafting.
Orb of Scouring and Orb of Annulment
Orbs of Scouring remove all mods, resetting an item to a white state, while Orbs of Annulment remove a single mod. Both are advanced crafting tools. The former is best used when prepping an item for a new craft from scratch, especially with meta-mods. The latter is often used for fine-tuning rare items by removing unwanted affixes and is frequently used with expensive multi-mod setups.
Each currency in POE 2 serves a distinct purpose, and understanding their optimal uses allows players to make strategic decisions whether crafting, trading, or gearing up for endgame content.
